English For Frontliners


Many people have a poor command of the English language because they are trapped in a negative reinforcing cycle caused by the fear of the language. This programme aims to break this cycle by encouraging participants to use English. The participants will learn (or refresh their memory on) some basic grammar and have a lot of practise speaking English. At the end of the programme, they will be able to communicate confidently in English despite making some mistakes.

Case Study 1: Impact of Not Using Proper English In Customer Service


Mr. Amir is a successful entrepreneur. He only has the Malaysian Certificate of Education, but thanks to his hard work and selflessness, he now owns 5 outlets called Pak Abu Foodstop. Pak Abu Foodstop is not only popular with locals, but also tourists. The signature dish of all of his restaurant is Nasi Lemak.

Because Mr. Amir is not fluent in English, he always relies on his son Aman to be his interpreter when tourists ask questions like how he prepares cooking, what ingredients are used in cooking and more. The customer always interested on how Mr Amir prepares his signature nasi lemak. One of his regular and fans of his nasi lemak is Mathew.

Mathew is from the United States and is an influential Youtuber in food reviews around the world. For his video this time, he wanted to pay tribute to Mr. Amir's store by doing a review that will promote his restaurant worldwide. Although a regular, Mathew didn't notice Mr Amir problems in English.

Mathew wanted to do the review spontaneously, thus, on the day of the review, Mr Amir were completely caught off guard. Mathew started to interview Mr Amir, but when Mr Amir could not answer fluently, Mathew decided to discard the review to save Mr Amir from embarrassment. Had Mr Amir fluent in English, his restaurant will be known worldwide.

Case Study 2: Consequences of Limited English Use in Customer Service


Faz, 18, is a SPM graduate who works at one of the fast food restaurants while awaiting university admission. Fad has a basic but satisfactory use of English. His hobby of playing video games contribute to this.

One day, Faz received tourists from the United Kingdom at his counter. Faz learned that the tourist was from United Kindgom because of his deep English accent. Fazwas nervous but very happy to welcome the tourists.

"Welcome, SIr, dine in or take away?" "Dine in, may I have a burger with chips, please?" "OK Sir, anything else?" "That would be all" "Thank you, Sir". However, when the tourist order arrived, the visitor was surprised that Faz had put Mister Potato chips in with his order, not the fries.


"Excuse me" "Yes, Sir?" "I ordered chips" "That is chips, Sir" "This is crisps, when I said chips, I mean french fries, I thought Malaysian learn British English instead of American English" "I'm sorry Sir, I will change it straight away ". Faz was embarrassed by this incident and began to study English formally instead from video games.

Case Study 3: The Impact of Good English Use in Customer Service


Ahmad is a traditional wood carver. He inherited this skill from his father. Although his business is well known throughout Malaysia, Ahmad feels dissatisfied. This is because the Malaysian market is quite limited with fierce competition. Ahmad felt that if he could market his work abroad, it would surely be a good return.

Thus, Ahmad is determined to embark on a step in marketing his product. He started the process by creating a Facebook account to promote his product. The status is written in English to attract foreign collectors. In addition, he has also enrolled in international art exhibitions.

It is fruitful. Ahmad's registration was successful. He began to choose the several of his masterpiece to be exhibited. On the day of the exhibition, Ahmad's booth was filled with collectors. Apart from Facebook marketing techniques, Ahmad's fluency in English is also one of the major factors attracting those collectors.

Ahmad's ability to interpret his work in English has attracted overseas collectors to buy it. As Ahmad's instinct proved, the profit were good. On the closing day of the exhibition, Ahmad received an order which amounted to millions of ringgit. If Ahmad was not fluent in English, of course he would not have benefited from this much.
