Meaning:

You will forget about a friend or relative if you haven't seen or spoken to them in a while. Such relationships inevitably fall apart or might just wind up becoming distant acquaintances.

Example:

My college pal and I haven't spoken in years, and now I find it awkward to call. I suppose I've changed. Long absent, soon forgotten.
